Why I’m Making Christmas Cards in January

Since Christmas, I’ve still been in a Christmasy mood. Which has been nice because it has made the season feel like it’s lasted a little longer. I was very unwell Christmas day, so this has helped. I still felt like making Christmas things, and I’ve actually had a little bit of energy this month to do so.

It has also helped that my parents got us a Sizzix embossing/die cutting machine for Christmas, which has been so fun to play with. Plus, it’s made card making very easy. (And watching tutorials on YouTube for using fun card cutouts while I’m crashed in a recliner has been inspiring. It’s nice to feel like I’m learning something and getting creatively inspired, vs. just being stuck recuperating.)

So, I am making next year’s Christmas cards this January. It’s worked perfectly because I haven’t felt stressed about it, and I’ve been able to enjoy it. When next November rolls around I’ll have them ready to go.

Here’s a tip—if I make cards early and have them in mind for a specific person, I tuck them into an envelope with their name on the outside. That way I don’t forget which cards were for whom.

I’ve thought about doing this for Christmas presents too. I’ve actually wanted to make Christmas presents the previous winter in past years, but I’ve never been able to do it. I think the reason probably has been that I was still putting too much pressure on myself. I am better at knowing and accepting my limitations now. I’m finally learning to choose easier crafts and projects that are doable with my limited energy. When I look for ideas now, I gravitate towards ideas that are easy to make.

Plus, maybe this will help me towards completing the challenge of 52 little goals for the year—to go through the craft supplies under my bed and either use them, make a plan to use them, or donate them. I’ve had some craft supplies hanging around for far to long.

So, with this learning from the past, I just might make my (at least some) Christmas presents early. But then again, I’m OK if that doesn’t happen. It’s an option for when I’m feeling creative, but not something I am pressuring myself to complete.

I loved your blog post! Organizing my supplies is on my to do list as well—it will make crafting even more stress-free when everything is easy to find. 😉
One of my favorite things about craft parties is seeing how different people can see the same supplies and create such different things! Very inspiring!
Happy crafting to you too Amber!
