Fruits of the Spirit Printables + Mini Devotional

I’m excited to share my free Fruits of the Spirit printables with you today! This subway art based on Galatians 5:22-23 is a great tool for Bible verse memorization and meditation on God’s Word. I’m also sharing a mini devotional on spiritual growth and ways to further study this wonderful verse:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 NASB)

I love the phrase “fruits of the Spirit” from scripture, and as someone who loves to garden, I always look forward to harvest time. As we continue into harvest season this year, there is so much rich truth in this verse to unpack! Here’s what I think this verse has to teach us. (And keep reading to learn how to download the printables!)

PS See my Philippians 4:8 printables here. They’re a matching set to these printables.

Gardening and Spiritual Growth

I love gathering fresh strawberries, blueberries, and vegetables from the garden. In years past, I’ve loved helping my family with planting and maintaining rows of carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and exuberant zucchini plants. Recently, my help has been limited to picking fruit due to my health, but I’m still thankful for being able to participate, even in a small way.

Because I love to help things grow.

I get my green thumb from my great-grandfather (who was a dahlia farmer), my grandma, and my mom. I never even met my great-grandpa, but his enthusiasm for gardening inspired my grandma, and it’s still being passed down today. There’s something so wonderful about being a part of helping something new, healthy, and beautiful to thrive.

Nurturing growth is definitely a passion, so I love that God uses the term “fruits of the Spirit” to describe what he grows in us.

Like a committed, passionate gardener, God tends to our souls. He wants to use us to bring forth a beautiful, bountiful harvest.

And that’s where the beautiful words of Galatians 5:22-23 come in.

I want to be good soil (see Matthew 13:1-23) that brings about this kind of spiritual fruit!

And the wonderful thing is, we don’t have to feel pressured when we look at these verses in Galatians. Because we can rely on the Spirit of the Living God to strengthen us to pursue and live out these beautiful fruits.

I created this printable to help me slow down and meditate on the individual fruits of the Spirit. I noticed I tend to read this verse too quickly. That’s also why I created my Philippians 4:8 printables last year. Seeing these verses laid out in a different way visually invites me to slow down and see each individual word, and also aids memorization.

Verses that Illuminate Fruits of the Spirit

I want to be actively looking for the fruits of the Spirit in my life, praying for God to develop them in me.

To help us to also dig deeper into this verse, I’ve done some research using the Strong’s Concordance, which lists the original word (in Greek in the New Testament). I’ve found examples of where that particular word for a fruit of the Spirit is used elsewhere in the Bible.

I’ve shared one verse for each fruit of the Spirit below, and you can follow the links to Bible Hub to find additional verses.

– Love (Greek: agapé)

“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.”
(2 Corinthians 13:11 NIV)

– Joy (Greek: chara)

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
(1 Peter 1:8-9 NIV)

– Peace (Greek: eiréné)

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:7 NIV)

– Patience (Greek: makrothumia)

Note: For this printable I decided to use the NASB translation because “patience” is a word we’re more familiar with. The NIV uses “forbearance” and the NKJV uses “longsuffering.”

“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”
(Colossians 1:9-12 NASB)

– Kindness (Greek: chréstotés)

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
(Colossians 3:12 NIV)

– Goodness (Greek: agathosune)

“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.”
(2 Thessalonians 1:11 NIV)

– Faithfulness (Greek: pistis)

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.”
(Hebrews 13:7 NASB)

– Gentleness (Greek: praotés)

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
(Ephesians 4:2 NIV)

– Self-control (Greek: egkrateia)

“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.”
(2 Peter 1:5-9 NKJV)

Did you note how many times you see the words “fruit” or “fruition” or “unfruitful” in these companion verses?

I hope these printable will also be a helpful tool for you, in addition to being a piece of artwork!

The larger printables fit 8.5×11” paper. The black background won’t print all the way to the edges on home printers, so there will be a little white border. The smaller printables are “half-sheet” size and should fit a 5×7” frame. (They’re a little shy of 7” high and a little over 5” wide.)

Note: the black background will print with a little variation vs. pure black. I wanted some texture for a chalkboard vibe.
