Cinderella as Rosie the Riveter – Altered Coloring Book Art #3

I’m excited to share the latest of my altered color book pages.

I’ve been wanting to more coloring like this (as I mentioned in my list of easy ideas for summer fun).

I love coloring in general, and have found it even more fun to inject some originality. This is my way of keeping the creative juices flowing in spite of the limitations of chronic illness and chronic pain.

If you love coloring too, or are wanting to give it a try, here are some insightful tips from professional art therapists about how to benefit most from coloring.

So how do I get ideas for changing up a coloring page? I flipped through my book (this one) and Cinderella’s handkerchief on her head reminded me of Rosie the Riveter.

Cinderella before
Let’s make this page a little more interesting!

Once I added polka dots to Cindi–I mean, Rosie’s scarf, then it was a matter of getting Cinderella’s apron to look like overalls. Here is the vintage sewing pattern I used for inspiration. I also looked at this drawing for reference.

Rosie needed a more 40’s dress, and I love this one! To be honest, I’ve always (even as a kid!) thought Cinderella’s “original” dress was rather odd, with all those weird ruffles at the bottom. It looks like badly sewn elastic! I was quite happy to give her dress a makeover. I would totally wear this.

This was also a fun chance to see if I could getting the shading right for black hair (I added some blue to give her hair more depth.) I think it turned out pretty cool!

I used gray on the floorboards to make them look more weathered. But I wasn’t sure how to make birds wearing hats and vests more historically accurate, LOL! So I just colored them in. (PS these are the colored pencils I love.)

And there you have it! Cinderella is now Rosie, coming home from a long day at the factory and getting ready for some swing dancing with her new red dress!

If you’re looking for history-inspired coloring book pages, this is really cool (and free!). “Museums and libraries around the world participate in the Color Our Collections campaign. For it, they create free adult coloring books with free printable coloring pages, based on items from their collections.” I especially love the idea of coloring Alice in Wonderland illustrations!

Also, I have a few coloring book pages saved here on Pinterest too.

I hope this post inspires you to find a new way to be creative and relieve stress. Happy coloring!
