My Favorite Nonfiction Books From 2018

The nonfiction books I read this year are a bit of a strange mashup—historical figures, devotionals, and…design inspiration. Despite the odd mix, I think you’ll really enjoy these books.

Any time I recommend a nonfiction book, you know I liked it a lot, because I actually finished it instead of turning to my first love: fiction!

I hope you find some great inspiration and learn something new from these books.

All Things New
John Eldredge

My copy of this book is stuffed with sticky notes marking favorite passages. The message is so hopeful as Eldredge points out how the Bible again and again assures us that God has a wonderful future for us, and it’s not in some vague, boring heaven. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially recommend it to anyone dealing with chronic illness.

The Nesting Place
Myquillyn Smith

I gained a lot of fun and inspiring decorating ideas from this book, and I loved purusing the photos. I was pleasantly surprised by the author’s refreshing Christian perspective on our homes and possessions, and the reminder that we don’t need to aim for perfection.

Big Design Small Budget
Betsy Helmuth

I also really enjoyed this book focused on how to stretch your dollars while making a beautiful house. The ideas in the book seemed very achievable, and I feel like this book collected in one neat package the design ideas I’ve been gleaning from Pinterest and magazines my whole life.

Becoming Queen Victoria
Kate Williams

I’m fascinated by Queen Victoria, and I’ve read a little bit about her, and enjoyed movies exploring her life. If you’re like me and want to know what is fact and what is fiction, this book is very well written and informative, and kept my interest. I was also intrigued to learn more about her cousin Charlotte, the princess who would have been queen, and how her life impacted Victoria.

Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On
Stormie Omartan

This is one of the best books I’ve read on suffering and facing life’s challenges. Omartan continually keeps the focus on God, and her openness about her own struggles makes the book very authentic and relatable. I’ll definitely be reading it again.

Defiant Joy
Stasi Eldredge

I love gardening books. My favorite is Cut Flower Garden. I also enjoy memoirs. Last week I read About My Mother and it was pretty good. I really enjoyed the book Founding Gardeners, which is about the founding fathers of America and their love of gardening and how it impacted the way they lead our nation.
