My Reading Goals For 2020
Setting achievable goals has been a helpful tool for me to gain a sense of accomplishment despite chronic illness. It’s a healthy way to push back against the limitations imposed by my health (or lack therefore). Dysautonomia, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS and my other conditions may try to stop me, but I’m going to keep learning and pursuing my love for reading!
I really enjoyed setting reading goals for the first time last year, so I’m going to continue to challenge myself again this year. (My natural inclination would be to read a lot of fantasy, historical fiction, and young adult fiction, but I like stretching outside my favorite genres.)

- Read more classics
Paradise Lost—I’ve read segments here or there and now want to read the whole thing.
1984—I really enjoyed finally reading Fahrenheit 451 in 2019, so now I’m moving on to this dystopian classic.
Read more Agatha Christie—I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the first book I read by her last year. My book group selected And Then There Were None as one of our books, so that worked out perfectly! Good timing, because I’ve been wanting to watch this movie adaption, but want to read the book first.
- Read more short stories
My library has some short story collections, and I’ve been wanting to read more examples of this form of storytelling, so I can write better succinct stories myself.
- Finish abandoned books
The Silmarillon—I confess, I read half about a year ago, and want to pick it up again. Don’t get me wrong, I love it; it’s just a very involved read considering pretty much every character and location has three different names!
Walden—I started reading this several years ago, and loved it so much I kept wanting to underline passages. But I was reading a library book, so I decided to stop reading until I got my own copy. And when I did, I was reading other books and my reading of Walden just stalled. I’m going to pick up my neglected copy this year, probably in the spring.
- Read 1 Shakespearean play
This is my goal I rolled over from last year. I’m planning to read The Taming of the Shrew.

It really is hard to focus more on goals in the middle of chronic illnesses, esp. when we are juggling multiple ones! I am finding mini goals really are helping feel accomplished and stay focused! xoxo

So true about staying focused. Having a list like this on hand really helps when I’m feeling too scattered to know what to do next. Even if I can’t focus, I can at least have a sense of accomplishment by checking off some goals.
