You’ll also be able to download the free printable I created so you and your guests can write your own unique fairy tale together. More below on how to get the Mad Libs style printable.

This theme would make a great Halloween party, birthday party, or celebration for any time of year.

I geared my party for both kids and adults, so there are fun ideas for every age. Feel free to use these ideas as a jumping off point to tailor your party to any age.

Oh wait, let me do this properly.

Once upon a time, a party was about to begin…

Being a fairy for a day was a dream come true! The only challenge was walking through doorways. XD

Dress Up Like Fairy Tale Characters

One of my friends spent the summer reading a fairy tale each week with her kids, and then doing activities based on their readings. I had fun asking the kids which of the fairy tales were their favorites, and finding out why. I thought this was such a fun idea and it made me realize that a fairy tale themed party would offer so many opportunities.

You can invite guests to dress inspired by a fairy tale or a favorite character.

Costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you like!

Most kids (and even adults!) have a princess or pirate costume from Halloweens past in their closets, so this is a great opportunity to wear them again.

You could include costume ideas in your (print or digital) invitations:

  • Princess
  • Knight
  • Goldilocks or the three bears
  • Little Red Riding Hood or the wolf
  • A wizard, etc.

Invite guests to get imaginative. Maybe someone will turn up as the bean stalk in Jack and the Bean Stalk or the shoe Old Mother Hubbard lived in.

You could also give out prizes and awards for costumes. You could invite guests to vote for the winners too.

I chose to dress up as a fairy. I’ve wanted a pair of fairy wings since I was five years old. I went to my cousin’s house and she let me wear her fairy wings, and I never wanted to take them off. This pair of wings proved magical and brought back that feeling of whimsy and joy I experienced when I “transformed” into a fairy as a child!

Not sure what fairy tales to base costumes or your party off of? My friends recommend this updated version of fairy tales. The illustrations look gorgeous.

Write a fairy tale together

I created a Mad Libs style fairy tale printable for the party. I wrote the story with a mix of easy words for kids (no “adjectives” and “adverbs” on this one since my guests are pretty young.)

I also purposely chose words that didn’t really impact the flow of the story because the goal was to get the kids excited to go on a dragon egg hunt of their own, like the characters in the story.

You could always use my story as a jumping off point, crossing out word and customizing it to make it geared towards older kids or adults and creating more opportunities for the story to turn out wacky in a more traditional Mad Libs style.

I explained to the kids that we were going to write a fairy tale together, and I would be asking them for words that I would add to the story. I let them know once I had gathered all the words we needed, we would read the whole story together.

The kiddos at our party ranged from 2 to 7 and I was so happy that all ages understood and were able to join in. Since we had some very young ones, I let the kids know that if they wanted help thinking of a word, they could ask a grown up for help. I also had grown ups take the first couple words so that the kids could see how the game worked. To my delight, the kids jumped right in and surprised me with the creative words they came up with!

The moment of truth was when we read the story together. Would the kids be engaged and interested? I was thrilled that they listened attentively, giggling when they heard words they added to the story.

Hunt for Dragon Eggs

Then I announced that since the kids in our story went on a dragon egg hunt, we were going to go on a dragon hunt too! One of my friend’s kids jumped up and yelled “Yay!”

One detail in the story is that the kids are given bags to take on their journey to collect the dragon eggs. This is a fun idea for a take home gift.

My mom sewed little bags for each child, using a different color of ribbon for the handles. We let each kid know that they would collect the eggs that were the same color as their ribbons. This proved to be an easy way to make sure each child got the same number of eggs and prizes. Our bags were sewn from the bags new pillows and sheets come in. We had kept them because we didn’t want to waste the fabric, and they proved perfect for our hunt. You could also give out baskets or Halloween bags for kids to use.

We hid the eggs before the party and filled them with magical items. Our treasures included chocolate coins, glass marbles that looked like dragon scales, and fairy tale themed stickers like sparkly flowers, stars, and frogs. Feel free to get creative here! (PS I checked with my friends that the glass marbles were age appropriate beforehand since some of our guests were so young! You can also find larger glass marbles like these but I used the smaller size like these since that is what I had in my craft stash.)
