A Playlist of Calm Songs

I have some ideas to share that will help you create a calm playlist when you need some quiet, relaxing music.

A few years ago, I started creating a calm playlist to listen to while I do my physical therapy stretches and when I’m trying to unwind at night.

Because of my POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), a form of Dysautonomia, my autonomic nervous system doesn’t function correctly, One of the symptoms I deal with is rapid heartbeat, which can make it especially hard to relax. Music isn’t a cure by any means, but its one of the tools in my toolbox (including medicine) that I can turn to.

Where to Find Calm Songs?

For awhile I had trouble finding songs that were interesting but not too…rambunctious. I like rock and pop and alternative—songs that make me want to dance—but these aren’t very conducive to getting ready for bed.

Thankfully, there are lots of ways to discover calm songs that I enjoy.

I’ve been using the Shazam app to find out the names of songs at my doctor’s waiting rooms, massage appointments and acupuncture appointments. Certain songs have jumped out at me in movies and TV shows.

I’ve also found songs from watching figure skating and noting the song names.

A few of these songs I discovered by watching YouTube videos, like Ray Grimes’ beautiful and soothing painting tutorials. By looking up these songs on YouTube, other song recommendations pop up, and I find myself going down a rabbit trail that helps me find even more songs.

I hope this post inspires you so that you can create a calm playlist that’s the perfect fit for you.

I’d love to hear what songs you have on your playlist. Be sure to leave a comment below with your suggestions.

Here’s a tip: I’ve downloaded several of these songs for free form my library. Look up Freegal on your library’s website—it’s a free and legal way to get access to music.

Bonus recommendation: I also love the songs from the soundtrack for Pride and Prejudice. (I just removed the song The Militia Marches In from my calm P&P playlist because that one has a marching beat, which is definitely not suited for my calm list!)

PS You may recognize my friend Melissa Miles’ name from when we ran a contest to win a song written by the two of us. You can get the winning song here free.

PPS Jake Sidwell is a composer living with chronic illness, so I especially wanted to highlight his music here. I really enjoy his CDS Fables and I Am the Noise, so I hope you’ll check them out and support him if you enjoy his songs.

I’m looking forward to listening to the music you recommended, Cassie! I really enjoy listening to music by Dan Gibson. It’s a mix of recorded sounds from nature with gentle music added. I own three of his CDs, but a lot of his music is available on YouTube. I also enjoy listening to Quiet Quest – Study Music

Ooh thank you for the recommendations Lauren! I’m especially intrigued by the name Yellow Brick Cinema. When I was very little, The Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie, and it still holds a special place in my heart.
Hope you’re having a restful day and that you enjoy these songs.
