Rooted and Established in Love Printables + Mini Devotional

I’m excited to share my new Rooted and Established in Love printables with you right in time for Valentine’s Day! I had a lot of fun creating these whimsical tree designs (they make me think of something Suessical) inspired by Ephesians 3.

I hope you enjoy these printables all year round too—after all, we can use the reminder that we are loved every day of the year, not just on certain holidays! These verses from Ephesians are so powerful, and my hope is these printables will help us aspire to love well and remember that the strength to do so comes directly from our mighty God!

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

Rooted and Established Love

These verses are so amazingly rich, so let’s take a moment to unpack this great visual: rooted and established in love. When we’re rooted and established in the love of Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to understand just how loved we are. And Christ is glorified through this.

It’s such a great reminder that love doesn’t have to be something we manufacture. It comes from our relationship with God. Like roots taking up nutrients from the ground, we draw on the well of God’s love for us, and that love grow beautifully, like plants that sprout healthy leaves and vibrant flowers.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
1 Peter 4:8 NIV

Recently, I was listening to a podcast that referenced Jeremiah 17:7-8 as a reminder that even during the pandemic, God can produce fruit in our lives.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,

    whose confidence is in him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water

    that sends out its roots by the stream.

It does not fear when heat comes;

    its leaves are always green.

It has no worries in a year of drought

    and never fails to bear fruit.”

Love that Bears Fruit

This past year has probably felt like a drought in ways for most of us. As someone with chronic illness, I’m definitely familiar with the feeling that I’m living in a season of drought.

I was so encouraged by these verses and the images they invoke of an orchard thriving and beautiful—despite the heat and cloudless skies.

These words from Jeremiah made me think of the deep roots talked about in Ephesians and how love is one of the most beautiful fruits we can bear, even when we feel like there’s not much else we can do. Our circumstances may limit us, but that doesn’t stop God’s love.

When our roots are established in Christ, our love is drought-proof.

John 15 further talks about our ability to bear fruit if we are in Christ. The words of Christ in John 15:5 read: “‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’”

Again, later in the chapter, we’re told how essential it is that we’re rooted in God’s love and made to abide in God’s love. “‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.’” (John 15:9 NIV).

PS for a wonderful study on Christ as the vine, I highly recommend Abiding in Christ by Andrew Murray. It’s on my list to re-read because it was one of my favorite Bible studies I participate in years ago.

– How is Christ calling you to be more deeply rooted and established in His love?

– In what area do you most need to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit right now?

– Pray and ask God who He would like you to reach out to and share His love with. Maybe someone among your friends and family especially needs someone to check in on them right now, or maybe there’s a gift or talent you have that God is calling you to use to share His love.

I made a version that is pink and a little more Valentine-themed (the pink also made me think of spring and cherry blossoms).

I also made one blue and green so it looks a little less season-specific.

Finally, I made a version where the text is in white, for a more minimalist look.

They all print on 8.5×11” paper, with a white border.

    I loved reading this! Not only does it correlate wonderfully with Valentine’s Day around the corner, but it is a reminder that is never unnecessary! I love the verses you included. I have Eph. 3:17 written out on one of my prayer cards and used to pray it over myself every day! I’ve long since fallen out of that habit, but this post reminded me how critical it is to remember that CHRIST, not me, is the root AND source of all love. Without that, we get the order all wrong and everything goes downhill fast. Thank you for reminding us all of this critical, beautiful truth.
